WAN technology consists of several types of connections, including:
1. Leased Line (dedicated point –to-point)
2. Circuit Switched
3. Packet Switched

1. Dedicated Point to Point

Is a point to point link or dedicated connection. This connection does not require a call setup process before sending data between DTEs. The delivery mechanism on the leased line connection is done synchronously serially. This connection can occur in a simple switching network, the network that is built has many physical connections, but for operation at one time there is only one connection function. The path for this connection is usually multiplexed, using either Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) or Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) techniques. Implementation in the field is implemented using HDLC and PPP concepts.

2. Circuit Switching

In this technique, before sending data, the connection establishment process must first be carried out by performing a call setup procedure. PSTN and ISDN are systems that implement this circuit switching connection.

3. Packet Switching.

This technique is a WAN switching method that allows users to share bandwidth with other users to save costs. This technology is the development of Leased Line technology. The data transmission mechanism is carried out in Synchronous Serial.
In some concepts, this technique is known as the Store and Forward concept, with technical delivery of data from the sending host to the receiving host will occur if there is a connection between the two either directly according to the hop sequence planned in the routing concept, or indirectly by sending data to the destination through another router as an intermediary, which clearly targets the delivery of data to the destination host must occur.
