1. Campus Area Network (CAN)

CAN is similar to a MAN computer network, but is limited to one area. This network is commonly used in educational activities, such as lab practice, class updates, exams, email, and notifications. However, this network which is considered more secure and fast can also be used for other means.

So, Campus Area Network is a combination of a number of local computer networks (LAN) that are connected to each other in the area of an educational institution. Meanwhile, CAN which refers to the Corporate Area Network and Controller Area Network has a greater reach than LAN because it covers several buildings in certain areas. Even so, the range of CAN is narrower than WAN and MAN.

The function of CAN is to connect computers in an area so that they can communicate with each other and exchange data. The majority of CANs consist of a combination of several LANs connected by switches and routers that create a single network. That way, every network user can communicate with each other directly, with or without cables.

2. Internet

In terms of language, the internet means a network between or liaison. Meanwhile, from the operational definition aspect, the internet is a world-scale computer network that is connected using the TCP/IP protocol. Computers connected to the internet can number in the millions, even billions.

Therefore, with the internet, everyone on earth today can communicate with each other as well as obtain information from billions of websites. The internet has become a kind of giant library that can provide various information for various needs, both in the form of writing, images, videos and multimedia products.

The ability of the internet to communicate with the people of the earth, without being limited by geographic area, allows it to facilitate a variety of social activities, business, and many others. As a result, there are currently developing online trading facilities, social media, distance education, and much more.

Long before being widely used in the world, the internet was originally developed by the United States Department of Defense in 1969. At that time, it was called the ARPANET (US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) program.

The US military developed the original ARPANET with the aim of forming a large-scale computer network so that the centralization of information in one place could be avoided. That way, the risk of communication chaos when an information center is destroyed by war can be avoided.

Entering the decade of the 1980s, the ARPANET was split into 2 networks, namely ARPANET and Milnet, but both of them could still be connected to each other. This interconnection network is called DARPA Internet, and hereinafter referred to as the Internet. After that, the internet was developed for academic purposes in the US, and then soon expanded to other fields so that it could be accessed from personal computers.
