To connect to the internet network, we need hardware in the form of network cables as a medium for connecting one network to other network devices. This network cable is not only one kind. There are various types of network cables that you need to know the functions and how to use them one by one. We must not pair this network cable incorrectly, because later the computer network performance will not be optimal. For that we need to know the characteristics of each network cable to distinguish one from another. Therefore, let’s discuss what are the types of network cables and their uses.
1. Coaxial Cable
Coaxial cable is often found in network installation. This coaxial cable consists of 2 layers of conductors. The first layer contains solid copper wire and is wrapped in an insulator layer located in the middle. Then the second layer is referred to as metal shielded whose function is to prevent interference from outside, and is located above the insulator layer. Coaxial cable is usually used for network use with high bandwidth because it is considered safer from all kinds of interference. The price is also cheaper than other network cables, and the risk of signal loss is quite low.
2. Twisted Pair Cable
Twisted Pair Cable is a network cable that has 8 pairs of wires with different colors in the twisted pair. The function is the same as Coaxial cable, only the structure of the cable is different. The inner layer of this twisted pair cable contains copper wire which is used as a conductor. This Twisted Pair Cable has 3 types:
• UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair)
UTP cable is a type of twisted pair cable that does not use a shield on the inside of the cable. The price is much cheaper than other twisted pair, so UTP is most often used in network installation.
• FTP (Foiled Twisted Pair)
FTP cable has an aluminum foil shield on the outside of the cable pair that can withstand electromagnetic wave interference. So this cable has a more expensive price than other twisted pair.
• STP (Shielded Twisted Pair)
Almost the same as FTP, STP is also wrapped in aluminum foil, but what is wrapped is each pair of copper cables inside the STP. So there will be 4 aluminum shielded pairs in the cable.
3. Fiber Optic Cable
Fiber optic cable uses a material made of glass with a very small size of 120 micrometers. Its very small size makes fiber optic faster to transmit data than other cables. Even the data transmission speed can reach 100 Gbps over a distance of thousands of kilometers. So that currently many Fiber Optic Cables are chosen by Internet Service Providers to provide high-speed internet networks. Because of its high speed, Fiber Optic is priced very expensive.
Those were some of the types of network cables used by ISP service providers. Its use must also be adjusted to the needs to be more efficient and durable.
