A PAN network is a connection that users use to connect to electronic devices, such as wireless mice, keyboards, speakers, and computers. Surely not many people know about what PAN is, that PAN is a network that can only be used over short distances, ranging from centimeters to several meters. Currently, many people use devices that support PAN, namely smartphones and bluetooth speakers. However, the actual understanding of the PAN network is not only limited to that, but can be even broader.
Definition of PAN
Definition of PAN PAN stands for Personal Area Network which is a network that is used to communicate short distances between personal devices. The PAN network involves several personal electronic devices, such as smartphones, PCs, and so on. Because the range is very close, approximately ten meters, of course this PAN network is very different from the WAN network which has a very wide range. PAN can be a wireless or wired network, for wireless networks using methods such as bluetooth, Wifi, IrDA; while for a wired network can use USB. Various devices in a PAN can be connected to each other and can also be connected to a LAN network. Although devices can be connected to each other, when you want to connect to the internet only computers can connect directly. This is a factor of the PAN network that does not include a router, so it cannot connect to the internet directly.
What is WPAN?
WPAN stands for wireless personal area network, is a group of devices that are connected to each other using a wireless network (wireless). Now, most devices use WPAN to connect and communicate with each other. Just like PAN, WPAN also only has a small range and what distinguishes it is that WPAN does not have to use cables to connect to each other. Bluetooth is one of the wireless protocols in PAN, its range is only effective at a distance of no more than ten meters.
Characteristics of PAN
PAN is a network that has its own characteristics and makes it different from other networks such as LAN or WAN.
The characteristics of PAN are:
1 . Is a communication network with a short range.
2 . Can connect to the internet using WPAN.
3 . Devices that can be used as a PAN: bluetooth, keyboard, wireless mouse.
4 . Does not require large power and large costs.
Example PAN
- Body Area Network
A mobile network that moves within the reach of its users, for example a user connects bluetooth earphones and moves to carry out their activities. “Move within the user’s reach” refers to activities that are being carried out at the same time as smartphones and bluetooth earphones are connected.
- Offline Network
Every device is connected to each other via bluetooth or Wifi, for example a printer, speaker, mouse, keyboard without using the internet. So that communication networks are formed between devices in small rooms such as rooms or homes.
- Home Office
In the home office, PAN is used with the aim that it can be separated from the network used by other users. This network acts as a separate part with other devices that are connected to each other for work purposes.
PAN function
PAN is a network that, when compared to a WAN, will be very different because the WAN has a very wide range, while the PAN is only a short distance away.
However, PAN also has functions that make some human activities more productive, namely:
1 . PAN serves as a center and starting point for various devices to be able to connect to each other from a short distance, for example a smartphone with a PC, and so on.
2 . PAN also serves to communicate and transmit data over short distances.
Advantages of PAN
If you use a Personal Area Network, you can experience several benefits including:
- Does not require extra large space
- No additional cables required
- Can be used in offices, conferences and meetings
- Can connect with multiple devices at the same time
- Cost-effective, easy to use, safe and practical
- Data can be synchronized between connected devices
Disadvantages of PAN
- Data transfer tends to be slow, especially if the device is more than the specified limit
- Can only be used in private areas because the range is not large
- PAN may interfere with radio signal
