The development of digital image manipulation greatly influenced the photography industry. These developments created the art of photo retouching and changed the way things work: products that would normally only take a professional photographer hours or even days to create, can now be produced by even amateur artists. Digital image manipulation has contributed so much to the world of photography by enabling manipulations that were initially difficult or even impossible. Photoshop plays a major role in the development of today’s digital world.

During the digital photography revolution of the 90s, Photoshop became the industry standard. Many photographers use this program to optimize the final results of the photos they create.

With the advent of graphics tablets, especially from Wacom, programs like Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter are increasingly needed to create original images. Using a pressure sensitive tablet can enhance the effect of a paint brush, eraser, or other tool. Tablets are used globally by professional comic illustrators, architects, studio artists and others. Even ILM, the special effects company that played a role in the production of the Star Wars films, uses a tablet in combination with Photoshop to optimize its productions.

Photoshop has the ability to read and write raster format images such as .png, .gif, .jpeg, and others. Photoshop also has a few typical file formats:

• PSD (Photoshop Document) format that stores images in layers, including text, masks, opacity, blend modes, color channels, alpha channels, clipping paths, and duotone settings. The popularity of Photoshop made this file format widely used, forcing programmers of other image editing programs to add the ability to read the PSD format in their software.
• PSB’ is the latest version of PSD designed for files larger than 2 GB .
• PDD is another version of PSD which can only support PhotshopDeluxe software features.
